El róver Perseverance de la NASA logró captar en video cómo la luna Fobos pasaba frente al Sol, desde el mirador del cráter Jezero en Marte. Estas observaciones pueden ayudar a comprender mejor la órbita de la luna y el manto del planeta rojo.
El eclipse duró poco más de 40 segundos. Se trata de un fenómeno mucho más corto que un eclipse solar típico que involucra a la Luna de la Tierra. Fue capturado con la cámara Mastcam-Z de próxima generación de Perseverance el 2 de abril.

Si bien no es la primera vez que algún róver logra captar a Fobos, se trata del mejor vídeo de un eclipse solar en Marte hasta la fecha, con la tasa de fotogramas más alta de la historia.
«Sabía que iba a ser bueno, pero no esperaba que fuera tan increíble», celebró Rachel Howson de Malin Space Science Systems en San Diego, integrante del equipo que opera la cámara, según publica la NASA.
«Se siente como un cumpleaños o un día festivo cuando llegan [las imágenes]. Ya sabes lo que viene, pero todavía hay un elemento de sorpresa cuando llegas a ver el producto final», agregó.
En tanto, Mark Lemmon, astrónomo planetario del Instituto de Ciencias Espaciales en Boulder, resaltó: «Se pueden ver detalles en forma de sombra de Fobos, como crestas y baches en el paisaje de la luna. (…) También puedes ver manchas solares. Y es genial que puedas ver este eclipse exactamente como el róver lo vio desde Marte».
A medida que Fobos rodea Marte, su gravedad ejerce pequeñas fuerzas de marea en el interior del planeta rojo, deformando ligeramente la roca en la corteza y el manto del planeta. Estas fuerzas también cambian lentamente la órbita de la luna. Como resultado, los geofísicos pueden utilizar esos datos para comprender mejor lo flexible que es el interior de Marte.
Dentro de decenas de millones de años, Fobos se estrellará contra el planeta rojo, aseguran los expertos, pero por el momento se trata de una «lenta espiral de muerte».
